Headquarters located 2 miles south and 12 miles east of Kyle. In 1905, 50 000 acres of land were leased to the Matador Cattle Company, which originated in 1885 in Dundee, Scotland. At the time of the leasing, their head office was located in Trinidad, Colorado. The company grass-fattened steers until 1922, during which time their operation along the Saskatchewan was rated as the most profitable of the Matador activities in the North. The provincial government then, under pressure from the farmers and ranchers, rendered the Matador land into community pasture. This parcel of land is now one of the largest community pastures in Saskatchewan. |

Headquarters located 2 miles south and 7 miles east of Kyle. In 1946, seventeen World War II veterans began the Matador Co-op Farm. The veterans used army surplus equipment to break the virgin land. Their houses were built in a semi-circle on 100-foot wide lots with a playground in the center. In 1954 the Leyton Schoolhouse was moved to the farm, where it still stands. In 1964, the number of students dropped from 24 to 9 and the children were bussed to Kyle to attend classes. The Matador Co-operative Farm was sold to the Saskatchewan Land Bank Commission in 1975. Six of the ten men who leased the Farming Pool at this time were sons of the original Matador Co-op Farm. In 1992, the Co-op Farm purchased the Cleaning Plant from the Credit Union. They built a plant in 1999 in Swift Current, and purchased the Pool Elevator in 2002. The old plant was then demolished. The Kyle Seed Cleaning Plant cleans canary seed, while the Swift Current plant cleans lentils, chick peas, and peas. Today, the Matador Farming Pool continues to produce grain, mostly durum and specialty crops, and maintains a herd of commercial cattle. A total of 15 people still reside at the Matador Farming Pool. |
